Josef Velčovský (born October 7, 1945) is a Czech painter, graphic artist, and illustrator. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he gained the foundation for his further artistic career. Subsequently, between 1970 and 1975, he completed an artistic residency in France, which significantly influenced the character of his work and allowed him to become familiar with the European art scene.
In addition to his own artistic practice, he has also devoted himself extensively to book illustration. Over the course of his career, he has illustrated more than seventy books, leaving a notable mark on the literary world as well. His work is represented in collections both in the Czech Republic and abroad.
Josef Velčovský is among the artists who have long contributed to the development of Czech visual art and illustration. His works are appreciated internationally for their coherence, which evokes an immediate emotional response in the viewer.
